    I wouldn’t describe myself as a person who likes to run for the sake of running. It is one of those things I do because I know I should, but I don’t enjoy it. I have never run a marathon, and I do not plan on running one anytime soon. However, one thing I know you shouldn’t do before you start a marathon (besides eat Mexican food) is sprint to the starting line. Running a business is much like running a marathon with long hours, chaffing (mental chaffing), fatigue, checkpoints, ups and downs, and so much more. But even before all that, you have to start your business and, it turns outs, starting a business is like sprinting to the start of a marathon.

This sprint is exhausting. You have a long list of things you need to get done: get your idea onto paper, name your business, organize the products or services, coordinate your resources, brainstorm ways to increase efficiency, get the right people at the table, find a space to work from, set prices, test the market, and so on. Then on top of this to-do list, you need to build a website, make a logo, set up your social media pages, create your Google profile, ensure you can be found on Google, make letter heads, and design labels for your product.

     Because of the workload, the marketing tasks are often left for last, but these essential marketing elements provide the boost for a successful start. For instance, your website validates your business while you earn credibility. One you’ve established credibility, it draws more customers to you on its own merit, saving you time and money. Likewise, a logo helps people remember your business, giving them a feel of who you are and what you deliver. For an example, look at Apple, their logo is simple and sleek, reminding customers that their products are too. Another key marketing element is social media. You can either sink or swim here. To ensure it aids your business, fill out all fields in your social media profiles and keep pages updated with interesting content; this can make all the difference for business success. Last but not least—Google is the source of (almost) all of our information, so if you cannot be found there, you won’t be found. Set up a business account with Google to allow customers to find you and spread the word.
